LONDON TENANTS REPRESENTATIVES GROUP STEERING GROUP MEETING TO DISCUSS THE HOUSING & PLANNING BILL AND ITS IMPLICATIONS
GUEST SPEAKER: LORD KENNEDY OF SOUTHWARK
Representatives from the SGTO have met with Lord Roy Kennedy of Southwark who is supportive of the issues and concerns we have raised and has agreed to attend a meeting with Tenant Representatives from across London, the details of which are attached to this notice.
The Southwark Group of Tenants Organisations has agreed to facilitate the meeting and we are writing to you to provide you with details and background documents.
DATE: Friday 15th January
TIME: 2pm – 4pm
VENUE: The Council Offices, 160 Tooley Street, London SE1 2QH
The Bill is currently progressing through the various committee stages in Parliament and is presently in the House of Lords. Lord Kennedy, who will be the keynote speaker at the meeting has agreed to consider and promote any amendments we wish to put forward.
This is a critical time for the future of council housing and for council tenants and it is important that we consider the impact of this legislation such as ‘Pay to Stay’ which, if implemented will see rents for some families increase by three to four times their present level; the disposal of high value properties to fund ‘Right to Buy’ for Housing Associations and the proposal that all new tenancies will be two to five years.
It is clear that the future of our homes and the destruction of our communities are very much under threat from this proposed legislation and we cannot stand by and let this happen. Please see attachment for background information on the Housing and Planning Bill
