Tuesday night saw the second Annual Lambeth Community Pride Awards, hosted by the Mayor of Lambeth Councillor Saleha Jaffer at the Kia Oval.
The MC for the evening was Miranda Brawn, barrister, vice chair of the Black Cultural Archives. Other dignitaries included Rick Ogden commander for Lambeth London Fire Brigade, Nick Collins of the Met, Councillor Donatus Anyanwu, Councillor Scott Ainslie, Margaret Pierre director of High Trees and Mohammed Ijaz from South London Islamic Centre.
The winners and finalists were as follow:
Best Community Garden
Winner: Ace of Clubs; 2nd: Southwell Road Residents’ Garden; 3rd: Edmundsbury Court Estate.
The Best Private Garden
Winner: Cindy Kemp; Runners up: Sonia Cooper (Cressingham Gardens), Edwin Monterverde (Edmundsbury Court Estate), Mr & Mrs Morris (Jupiter Court – Caldwell Gardens Estate).
Bringing your Neighbourhood Together
Winner: Pat Broderick, Weir TRA; 2nd: George Richardson; 3rd: Stephen Keogh.
Innovation and Enterprise
Winner: Colin Crooks from Tree Shepherd; 2nd: Waterloo Community Theatre; 3rd Sports City London – Blackprint Legacy Foundation.
The Mayor’s Special Lifetime community champion Award
went to Hazel Fraser from Stanthorpe Triangle and Dr Anis Ayub.
Each finalist received a framed certificate and gift vouchers from £150 to £400. The evening was followed by a buffet and soft drinks (as the new Mayor doesn’t permit alcohol at her events).
